The Secret of Substance Abuse in the Jewish Community

Congregation Kol Am was honored to be awarded a local Community Impact Grant award from the Jewish Federation in the Heart of NJ for 2016.  The grant supports a program called:  The Secret of Substance Abuse in the Jewish Community: Connecting Torah to Recovery and the 12 Steps. This grant will allow us to launch a pilot program that aims to build awareness of a critical problem in the Jewish community, and to offer steps to provide support within a framework of Jewish values that intersect with the 12 step program.

The program will be held over the week-end of Dec. 2 - 4, 2016 at 59 Broad Street, Freehold.  The following events are planned:

  • Shabbat services on Friday, Dec. 2nd on the theme of the  12 Steps and Recovery.  The speaker that evening will be Jane Fox, a recovering addict, who will tell her story.  Evette Katlin will be the guest cantor.
  • Havdalah Service on Saturday, Dec. 3rd, to be highlighted by an exciting band of musicians led by Chazzan Jerry Blum, and Speaker, Audrey Freshman, LCSW CASAC from Adelphi University, speaking on The History of Addiction in the Jewish Community.
  • Workshops on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 4th, to be conducted by Rabbi Shemtov and our member Connie Greene, MA, CAS, CSW, CPS (Vice President of the RWJBarnabas Health/Institute for Prevention).  Workshops will be preceded by a musical interlude.

These major components were preceded on October 30th, by a program for parents about substance abuse, that was held during Religious School hours, so that parents could drop off their children, and stay for this important program. By acclamation, there will be follow-up sessions scheduled for parents.

Our partners in this project, in addition to the funding from The Jewish Federation in the Heart of New Jersey, are Beit Yosef, Jewish Family & Children's Services of Greater Monmouth County and the Freehold Jewish Center.

There is no cost to the community to attend these programs, but it is recommended that a check of $10 be sent to Congregation Kol Am to reserve a seat.  All checks will be returned upon arrival at the session.  Please indicate which days you plan to attend.
